California: Kingsburg Councilmember recall effort failed due to signature invalidations

The petitions against Kingsburg City Councilmember Jewell Hurtado have failed, as petitioners handed 423 signatures and got 310 valids. They needed 354 to get on the ballot. Opponents are focused on what they say is Hurtado's "Marxist/socialist agenda." Hurtado, a college student who has been compared to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, won her seat by just 8 votes in a district that appears to be heavily Republican (47.6% Republican registration). She also was arrested (and has pled not guilty) on a DUI. A recall would have costed about $80-90K.
