The first ever UK recall has now succeed. After getting enough signatures to get to the ballot, former Labour Party MP Fiona Onasanya (Peterborough) has announced via Twitter that she will not run in the replacement by-election. Petitioners had handed in enough signatures to get a recall on the ballot. Onasanya was considered removed, though she was allowed to run in the replacement race. Petitioners got 19261 signatures (27.6% of eligible residents. They needed about 7000 (10%). The recall was estimated to cost about £500,000 ($650,000).
The recall took place after her convicted due to claiming someone else was driving her car when she was caught speeding (11 mph over the limit). Onasanya had already been expelled from the Labour Party and spent three months in jail.
