Michigan: Signatures handed in against Bedford Charter Township Supervisor

Over 1000 signatures were handed in against Township Supervisor Adam Heikkila (R). Petitioners need 734 valids. Lead petitioner Kraig Dingman intends to run as an independent. The issues are allegedly failing to maintain business hours, pushing to have an ordinance violation dismissed against him, and claims of creating a hostile environment.

Michigan: Isabella County officials recall rejected for clarity reasons

Petitions to recall Township Trustee Robert Walton and Supervisor Jeffrey Bean were rejected by the election commission over clarity issues. This is the third failed attempt against Walton. The language was the same as a petition that was approved against Denver Township Supervisor John Pedjac.

The issue appears to be over a lease on a wind farm, with petitioners opposed to the wind farm.

Update: The Pedjac recall language was since overturned by a judge.

Oregon: Aumsville City Council can't hold meeting due to lack of quorom

Following the removal of three councilmembers, Trinia Lee,  Lorie Walters and Kevin Crawford, on July 3rd over a $12 per month increase in household utility bills, the council has been unable to meet due to a lack of a quorum. The council is suppose to appoint replacements for the seats, but due to the removal of the three and another councilor being absent there was no quorum for a replacement vote. 

Louisiana: East Baton Rogue Councilwoman facing recall effort

Councilwoman Tara Wicker (D) is facing a recall effort over claims of lack of communications, though it appears that the replacement of a deceased councilman by his wife is part of the fight. Petitioners needs 33 1/3 percent of registered voters to get on the ballot, about 6100 signatures.

Michigan: Bruce Township officials facing recall effort

Supervisor Richard Cory, Clerk Susan Brockmann and Trustees Paul Okeniewski and Mark Falker are facing a recall effort following the cancellation of a special meeting that would have changed the Bruce Township. Brockmann was suppose to resign and then be appointed township manager.

Petitioners need 888 signatures to get on the ballot.

“They have every right to a recall effort,” Brockmann said. “I am going to continue to do my job.”

She added: “We thought we had a valid transition move to leave a solid foundation for those coming into office in 2020, but now we have something that has become politically motivated by people going around spreading lies rather than hearing us out as a board.”

The earliest a recall vote could be on a ballot in Bruce Township is May 2019.

Recall language must first be approved by the Macomb County Election Commission and signatures can be submitted no later than 95 days prior to the proposed election date.

Signatures submitted to Macomb County can be no older than 60 days old.

Martone seems confident in the resolve the residents now have to make a change in their government.

“The citizens are banned together now,” she said. “Every person who showed up last night had a story about why they wanted the Clerk out of office. Everybody is fed up.”

Colorado: Push to stop Dolores School Board members recall rejected -- date for recall to be set

A protest hearing against the recall of School Board President Dee Prock and board member Vangi McCoy over questions about the language of the petition failed to stop the recall from going forward. The two will be facing a recall  over claims that the school has dropped in rankings.

UK: MP may be first person to face recall vote over free trips to Sri Lanka

MP Ian Paisley has been suspended for 30 days and is facing a potential recall vote after he received unreported all-expense paid vacations to Sri Lanka. Petitioners would need to hand in signatures equaling 10% of the registered voters. Paisley would lose his seat, but can run in the by-election.

Navajo Nation: Three School Board Members up for recall

President Hector Guerro, Vice President Bucky Apache and Steven Apache are all facing recall votes over complaints of travel expenses, though there seems to be a lot of questions over whether they can run in a race.

Ohio: Kent City Council vote for charter changes to increase signature amount for recalls

The City Council voted 8-1 to increase the signature amount for recalls to 25% of turnout in the last presidential election and require a stated cause of action. Kent was the site of a 2009 recall against five councilmembers (all survived). Apparently, there are some debates on an Ohio Supreme Court decision which prevents signature requirements from being tied to registered voters.

Maryland: Takoma Park Councilmembers facing recall effort over redevelopment project

Takoma city council members are facing a recall effort over their vote for a redevelopment project. Petitioners would need 20% of eligible voters, which would equal about 1500 signatures for the mayor.

Ohio: Cleveland Councilman facing recall efforts; move by council to make recalls more difficult

Councilman Basheer Jones is facing a recall effort after less than seven months in office. Petitioners need 676 signatures to get on the ballot. Jones won office by defeating Councilman TJ Dow by 13 votes.

City Council President Kevin Kelley is looking to tighten recall laws, potentially increasing thea grace period from 3 months to a six and preventing a recall in the last year in office.

Georgia: Aragon Mayor facing recall effort

Mayor Garry Baldwin is facing a recall effort after pushing for numerous employees to resign under threat of putting a bad review in their file.

Texas: Bedford Mayor, City Councilmembers facing recall effort over apartment complex

A push to build a 240-unit complex has led to recall efforts against Mayor Jim Griffin and Councilmembers Roger Fisher, Roy Turner and Rusty Sarter.

Wisconsin: Signatures handed in against Trempealeau County District Attorney

Petitioners have handed in 3385 signatures against District Attorney Taavi McMahon after he suspended an employee for refusing to attend the Jackson County DA's funeral as well as claims of prosecutorial failures. The county board has sought his resignation. McMahon has been on leave since May 9. McMahon's supporters claim the issue is a debate over new views of criminal justice reform.

One of the lead petitioners is the Osseo Police Department Chief. Petitioners need more than 2682 signatures to get on the ballot.

Colorado: Englewood Councilmember recall will be on ballot on September 18

Councilmember Laurett Barrentine will be facing a recall vote on September 18 over claims of bullying and firing threats. Petitioners, which included two former mayors, handed in 424 signatures. They needed about 364.

Update: The recall is set to cost $15,000.

Michigan: Recall effort against Lyon Township Supervisor rejected by Election Commission

Language in a recall against Supervisor Ed Nellist was rejected by the Election Commission.

California: Kern Law Enforcement Association President kicked out

Law Enforcement Association President David Kessler, the head of the 500 deputy sheriffs and District Attorney Investigators, was kicked out in a recall vote. The VP is serving as president. The push was after the Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood was reelected in a landslide. the KLEA originally endorsed his challenger, but then withdrew the endorsement.

North Dakota: Richland School Board facing August 2 recall vote

School Board members Lisa Amundson, Josh Mjoness and Sarah Myers are facing an August 2nd recall vote over alleged sexual misconduct by students and basketball players. The Superintendent has been put on administrative leave.

Arizona: Wickenburg Mayor recall fails

The recall effort against Mayor Everett Sickels failed. Petitioners, led by Councilman Ruben Madrid, handed in 579 signatures, and needed 440. 400 were certified.

Michigan: Marion School Board member facing petitions

Board Member Linda Raymond  is facing a recall after claims of pension violations against the superintendent, though the petition claims that Raymond recorded a closed session of the board, in violation of the open meeting act. 

Idaho: Albion Mayor loses recall vote

Mayor Sharon Hardy-Mills Wilmot lost her recall race 70-46. The recall was over complaints about utility bills, claims that she "lacks knowledge to 'adequately' and 'fairly' run the city and that she bullied people. The council will appoint a replacement.

Colorado: Pueblo students leading effort to recall school board following end of teacher strike

Petitioners handed signatures against school board president Barbera Clementi, VP Frank Latino and board member Robert Gonzales over  week long teachers strike. The student leading the recall effort was a supporter of the teachers' strike over a COLA increase. Petitioners need about 8000 signatures for each.

Michigan: Additional recalls sought in Isabella and Denver Township

Petitioners were filed against Isabella Supervisor Jeff Bean over the vote to create a township planning commission. Petitioners have also filed petitions against Denver Township Supervisor John Pedjac and Isabella Township Trustee Robert Walton. The Walton petitions were twice rejected due to clarity ground (petitioners were also complaining about a wind farm lease he signed).

Petitions must be in by August 3rd to get on the November ballot.

Missouri: Joplin Councilman facing petitions

Councilman Phil Stinnett is facing a recall effort over a request for wage concessions for police and firefighters. The leader of the recall effort lost a city council race. Petitioners need 20% of the votes from the last regular election or about 6315 signatures.

California: Los Angeles Councilmember recall fails

The recall of Councilmember Mike Bonin has apparently failed, as the campaign director has gotten a new job and the social media accounts have gone quiet. The recall was over a "road diet" plan.

New Jersey: Mahwah Mayor recall gets enough signatures to be on the ballot

Mayor Bill Laforet will be facing a recall vote, as more than 5000 signatures were validated -- petitioners needed 4150 to get on the ballot.

The issue was Laforet's backing and then moving away from an ordinance which bans non-New Jersey residents from using township parks, as well as an anti-Eruv ordinance. Both of the laws are allegedly aimed at Orthodox Jews and the city has been accused of anti-semitism and discrimination. The state has filed civil rights suits against the town, and the Town Council effectively rescinded the ordinance.

Laforet has been the subject of two no-confidence votes in three years.

Massachusetts: Rockland Selectman facing recall threats over investigation into other officials' inappropriate behavior

Selectman Ed Kimball is facing recall threats from former selectman Mary A. Parsons over a complicated investigation. Selectman Deidre Hall has been accused of pressuring Town Administrator Allan Chiocca into sexual activities because she would be voting on his contract extension and salary increase (Hall has since resigned). The investigation substantiated the allegations, but Kimball called the investigation a sham.

Petitioners need 500 signatures to get through the first stage, then need 1800 signatures to get on the ballot.

California: Calaveras Supervisor recalls fails after signatures disallowed

The recall of Supervisor Dennis Mills failed due to invalid signatures. Petitioners handed in 2125 signatures, they needed 1555 and got 1462, a more than 31% failure rate. The issue was Mills vote in favor of shutting down Cannabis ventures.

California: Irvine Mayor, Councilmembers facing recall threats

Mayor Don Wagner and Councilmembers Melissa Fox and Christina Shea were hit with chants of a recall after delaying the building of a Veterans Cemetery.

Ohio: Huber Heights Councilwoman facing recall effort

Councilwoman Janell Smith is facing a recall effort over her opposition to the city's water pressure project. Petitioners need 15% of the total votes cast in the last gubernatorial election.

Michigan: Isabella and Denver Township Trustees facing petitions

Isabella Trustee Robert Walton is facing a second petition over a wind project -- the first was rejected on clarity grounds.

Denver Township Supervisor is facing a petition on a failure to push for a township planning commission, which is also being led by an opponent of the wind farm.

Michigan: Signatures handed in against Tecumseh School Board members

Signatures were handed in against School board Vice President Steven Linn, treasurer Kimberly Amstutz-Wild, Secretary Debbie-Johnson-Berges and member Jim Rice over violations of the Open Meetings Act as well as other complaints. Petitioners handed in somewhere between 1800-1900 signatures -- they need 1491 signatures for each.

Michigan: Leoni Township officials recall over medical marijuana fee structures makes the ballot

Petitioners handed in enough signatures to get a recall on the November 6 ballot against Supervisor Howard Linnabary (R) (1136), Clerk Michele Manke (D) (1166) and Treasurer Lori Stack (D) (1154) over medical marijuana applications. The  law provided an administrative fee go to the seven board members medical marijuana applications. Petitioners needed 984 signatures to get on the ballot.

Replacement race reverses Colorado River Indian Tribe Recall, returning Chairman to power

Chairman Dennis Patch, who was ousted in an April recall vote, managed to come back and win the replacement race, receiving 331 votes. The recall was over water allotment issues.

Michigan: Cedar Creek Trustee facing recall threats

Treasurer Mary Hallett is facing recall threats over the issue of a landfill -- which was also the cause of a recall threats in 2006-2007.

The first petition was rejected due to clarity issues.

Update: The second petition was approved.

Georgia: Forest Park Mayor facing recall efforts over pay raise effort

Forest Park Angelyne Butler received a threat for a recall, though she vetoed a pay raise for the council.

Indiana: Attorney General facing calls for resignation or removal after sexual harassment charges

Attorney General Curtis Hill is facing calls for his removal or resignation following multiple sexual harassment complaints. Indiana does not have a recall provision.

California: Signatures turned in against Dublin Councilman

Nearly 6300 signatures were turned in against Councilman Abe Gupta. Petitioners need about 5300 valids. Gupta is also running for reelection on the same day, so a recall loss and an election win would take him out of office for a few months. Petitioners claim the issue is about growth, though Gupta claims that the petitions are to help one of the other candidates on the general election ballot, Bobby Khullar. 

California: No signatures handed in against Calaveras Supervisor

No signatures were handed for the recalls of Supervisor Gary Tofanelli and Jack Garamendi. Petitioners needed 1396 and claims a lack of leadership and jumping the line to be chairman. Garamendi's recall was over cannabis issues.

Over 2000 signatures were turned in against Supervisor Dennis Mills. Petitioners need 1555. The issue was Mills vote in favor of shutting down commercial Cannabis ventures.

California: Moreno Valley Council recalls fail to hand in signatures

The recall effort against Councilwoman Victoria Baca and Councilman David Marquez have both failed with no signatures being handed in. Baca had lost her seat in 2014 due to a recall, but came back and won election in 2016.

Arizona: Ballot Initiatives over Senator John McCain Recall

Petitioners would need 632,683 signatures -- as well as what I would think is a very surprising court ruling -- to allow this to go forward.

California: Victorville Councilwoman facing recall effort

Councilwoman Blanca Gomez is facing a recall effort over her Facebook Live video of the open casket for Hesperia Mayor Russ Blewett as well as other videos such as a homeless shelter and a sanctuary city meeting. Petitioners would need 9404 signatures in 120 days.

Ohio: Sandusky City Commissioner facing recall effort

Commissioner Nikki Lloyd is facing a recall threat over her support for a smoking ban, though the article also notes issues with another councilmember who has been charged with sex-related offenses and has faced calls from Lloyd and others to resign.

Wisconsin: Dover Town Chairman face July 31 recall vote

Chairman Mario Lena is facing two candidates in a July 31 vote over claims of unprofessional conduct. If no one receives an absolute majority, then the top two face off on August 28.

The two candidates are former town supervisor Dean Larsen and current town supervisor Sam Stratton.

Oregon: Aumsville City Council kicked out in recall vote

Councilmembers Trinia Lee (457-343),  Lorie Walters (459-339) and Kevin Crawford (448-351) were all kicked out on a recall vote on Tuesday. The issue was the vote for a $12 per month increase in household utility bills, which was passed to hire another police officer.

There is no replacement vote, as the remaining councilmembers appoint the replacements.
